How to stop leaking urine when lifting at home or at the gym
Leaking urine when you lift weights or heavy objects after having a baby? It's common, but it's not normal, and there are simple steps you can take to prevent it. This quick breakdown shows how to use your breath and core to protect your pelvic floor during lifts.
🔬 THE KEY PRINCIPLE
Pushing out against your abdomen or bearing down during a lift increases intra-abdominal pressure, which pushes down on the pelvic floor and organs like the bladder and leads to leakage. The fix is in your breathing: when you inhale, expand your rib cage outward using the internal obliques while drawing the front of your abdomen inward to redirect pressure away from the bladder and pelvic floor. Then exhale during the movement (both going down and coming up) while pulling the abdomen in even tighter to maintain support and relieve downward pressure.
🦵 WHO THIS IS FOR
✅ Urine leakage while lifting weights or heavy objects after having a baby
✅ Postpartum moms returning to strength training
✅ Anyone who tends to push out or bear down during lifts
✅ People wanting more lower back support during heavy lifts
✅ Anyone who wants to protect their pelvic floor and bladder
✅ YOU SHOULD FEEL
You should feel your rib cage expand outward on the inhale while your lower abdomen stays drawn in, rather than pushing out against your belly. On the exhale, you should feel your abdomen pull in even tighter as you lower and lift, with less downward pressure on your pelvic floor and a more supported lower back. This technique reduces leakage during heavy lifts. If leakage persists, consult a physical therapist or neuromuscular expert for a personalized program and to make sure your breathing mechanics are correct.
