Fix your knee pain during pickleball without a brace

August 14, 20262 min read

Are your knee braces just masking the real problem? Small form changes can do more for your knees long-term than any support ever will.

🔬
THE KEY PRINCIPLE
While players often use knee braces, tape, or compression sleeves to manage pain, implementing small habit changes and targeted exercises can reduce injury risk and promote long-term joint longevity better than relying solely on supports. Front knee pain comes from bending the knees while keeping the bottom tucked under, which shifts the center of gravity forward and puts unnecessary stress on the front of the knees. Outer knee pain comes from playing with feet turned out and knees bowing to the sides, overworking the muscle and ligament structures on the outside of the legs.

🦵
WHO THIS IS FOR
✅ Pickleball players dealing with front or outer knee pain

✅ Anyone relying on braces, tape, or compression sleeves to manage knee pain
✅ Players wanting to build long-term joint health instead of just masking symptoms
✅ Beginners and experienced players refining their ready position and footwork

YOU SHOULD FEEL
To correct frontal pressure, hinge at the hips, open the bottom backwards, and keep the knees directly on top of the shins — this shifts the pressure from the knees into the glutes. To correct side-to-side alignment, keep the feet neutral and knees in line with the feet rather than caving in or bowing out, whether standing still or shuffling, which balances the inner and outer leg structures and keeps pressure in the hips. During Mini Squats, keep the feet neutral while sitting back so the knees stay safely on top of the shins. During Side Shuffles, keep the feet neutral and knees aligned to train the brain to move correctly during active play. Not seeing improvement?
