The posture change you can make to prevent a rotator cuff tear

August 30, 20262 min read

Is your posture quietly tearing your rotator cuff? One muscle in particular is the most vulnerable — and most people don't even know it's at risk.

🔬
THE KEY PRINCIPLE
The rotator cuff consists of four muscles, often called the "SITS" muscles, which surround the shoulder and assist in movements like abduction, internal rotation, external rotation, and pulling the arms inward. Among them, the supraspinatus is the most susceptible to impingement, fraying, and tearing, since it's sandwiched between the humerus bone and the area where the collarbone and shoulder blade meet. Slouched posture, rounded shoulders, and a forward head position shove the head of the humerus up into the shoulder socket, restricting range of motion and creating friction that pinches and frays the supraspinatus, leading to tears.

🦵
WHO THIS IS FOR
✅ Anyone with rounded shoulders or a forward head posture
✅ People wanting to prevent rotator cuff impingement or tears
✅ Athletes and lifters looking to protect their shoulders during movement
✅ Anyone experiencing shoulder pinching or friction with overhead motion

YOU SHOULD FEEL
Correct posture by opening the chest and dropping the shoulder blades away from the ears to increase space in the joint and reduce injury risk. During everyday movements or lifting, keep the shoulder blades down and away from the ears by engaging the lower trapezius. During rotational movements, keep the shoulders down, opened up, and squeezed together. Think of the arm and shoulder blade like a see-saw — as the arm reaches up or out to the side, the shoulder blade should actively drop down to prevent pinching.
