Pickleball footwork drills
Are your ankles ready for pickleball's quick direction changes? Fast footwork isn't just for athletes — it's what keeps you reaching every dink and off the ground safely.
🔬 THE KEY PRINCIPLE
Fast footwork is required in pickleball to quickly reach the ball and avoid missing a dink. It's beneficial for both athletes and non-athletes, and it's especially useful for older adults with balance issues to help prevent falls. Training quick, controlled foot movement builds ankle stability and reaction speed for the direction changes pickleball demands.
🦵 WHO THIS IS FOR
✅ Anyone with wobbly or unstable ankles
✅ Pickleball players wanting to reach dinks more consistently
✅ Older adults working on balance and fall prevention
✅ Players wanting to reduce risk of knee issues and ankle sprains
✅ YOU SHOULD FEEL
Throughout each drill, keep your feet and knees in a neutral position facing forward rather than turning the feet out. In the Forward and Backward Drill, step over a line in a forward, forward, back, back pattern, practicing in both directions to stabilize the ankles both ways. In the Side-to-Side Drill, step two feet over and two feet back over the line, including moving backward to prepare for balls coming at you. In the Sticky Slide Drill, step in an "in, in, out" pattern while keeping the second foot lifted — not tapping it down forces you to land on one foot and stabilize the ankle faster, targeting single-leg balance.
