Women's Running - Your ACL is at risk every single time if you run like this!
Are you doing everything right and still worried about tearing your ACL? Female athletes face a significantly higher risk of non-contact ACL tears than men — and it usually comes down to how you land.
🔬 THE KEY PRINCIPLES
Non-contact ACL tears often happen during sports like volleyball, basketball, soccer, and running, simply from landing incorrectly with no outside collision involved. Women are more prone to these injuries because wider hips and narrower knees create a larger "Q angle" — the angle of the femur relative to vertical. A larger Q angle makes the knees naturally cave inward, letting the tibia and femur shift more easily, which puts extra strain on the ACL's job of keeping the femur from sliding forward on the tibia.
🦵 WHO THIS IS FOR
✅ Female athletes in volleyball, basketball, soccer, or running
✅ Anyone who notices their knees caving inward when they land or run
✅ Runners and jumpers wanting to prevent ACL injury before it happens
✅ Athletes returning to sport after a previous knee injury
✅ YOU SHOULD FEEL
When landing from a jump, aim to land lightly, avoid staying forward on your toes, and shift your weight back into your heels and hips. When running, your hips should stay underneath you, knees in line with your feet, and feet landing flat without rolling inward or outward. During hip hikes, you should feel the work in the side hip (hip abductors) — not in the front glutes or pelvic floor. Not seeing improvement? Consult a physical therapist for a personalized program.
